What is Car Power Steering?
Anyone remember the old manual steering? No need to work out the upper body at the Gym!
Power steering is an automotive system which uses a separate motor (or engine power) to reduce the amount of muscle/effort necessary to turn the steering wheel/front wheels
This helps a driver steer the car – and makes it easier to manoeuvre the car at lower speeds- a great feature when cornering at slow speeds and parking!
There are three types of power steering in modern vehicles.
- Hydraulic
- Electric
- Hybrid electro-hydraulic
IF it’s becoming harder to turn the steering wheel or you begin hearing a ‘whining’ sound coming from under your hood when you make a turn, your car might be running low on power steering fluid.
Types of Power Steering Fluid
Refer to your car owner’s manual to learn what type of power steering fluid to use in your auto.
Tip: Choosing an incompatible fluid to your car can cause damage
Be sure to select a replacement steering fluid that is recommended
1. Synthetic power steering fluid.
Most newer vehicles use a synthetic fluid that are Lab created. These synthetic varieties are usually engineered for specific types of cars or steering systems.
2. Automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
The same fluid used for automatic transmissions can be used in some power steering systems.
3. Non-synthetic, mineral power steering fluid.
Mineral hydraulic fluid may be used in some instances that accept ATF.
4. Universal
When using a universal fluid, you must verify its viscosity and chemical compatibility with the power steering fluid being used in the power steering system.
If the properties do not match, the fluid will not be as beneficial.
